Step Into the Realm Of Extraordinary
Welcome to the home of the Giant Tree Circle, a visionary project born from a captivating tale in 1984, now becoming a monumental reality spanning Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, and England. Tens of thousands from all walks of life will unite to plant their trees, crafting a tapestry of stories destined to endure for generations.
History
The Giant Tree Circle was first conceived in 1984. At that time the plan was to plant a single tree at one of the four cardinal compass points of Britain every four years, starting in 1984. The last tree would be planted in the year 2000 and these young trees would symbolise life and hope for the century to come. The project was started and never finished.
On several occasions a number of attempts were made to fulfil the project’s original intention, but it remained incomplete. Meanwhile the idea has grown. So, not four trees, not hundreds of trees, but thousands and potentially, millions, scribing a giant tree circle that traverses Scotland, Northern Ireland, Eire, and England. The centre of the circle is the same island in which the idea was born, Ynys Môn, located to the west of Snowdonia in North Wales.
Purpose
We may not have a unified point of view on many things but on this we can probably agree – socially, economically, and environmentally, to name just three, we are facing huge challenges at home and around the world.
Fuelled by the anonymity of social media and a pervasive sense of insecurity we hurtle deeper into an uncertain future. We are convinced that we need to give far greater emphasis to that which connects and sustains us. We need to be bridge builders, not bridge destroyers. The history of the British Isles and Ireland is riven with discord, inequality, exploitation and trauma. Yet, alongside this there are countless other ways in which the kinder, more generous, and inclusive aspects of our human story have also contributed to who we are today. And it is this ‘we’ that the Giant Tree Circle attempts to emphasise.
Regional and national culture is important and we don’t want or seek ‘sameness’, however, we share our identity as human beings, and the future rests in our willingness to offer, build, and accept good relationship. There is no future worth living that does not acknowledge the power of community and peaceful, collaborative, friendly relationships between neighbours, locally, regionally, and nationally.
The Giant Tree Circle is a symbol of unity, shared opportunity, neighbourliness, friendship, and resilience.
